PM Stack Index

About & methodology

PM Stack Index ranks the software product teams use by counting how many product-management job postings name each tool. Job ads are written by the hiring team, so they're a public, dated signal of what a team actually works in.

How we count

  1. Sources. Each company's public job-board feed on Greenhouse, Lever or Ashby. Those are the same feeds their careers pages use. No scraping behind logins. Board names come from open directories of confirmed boards, the Common Crawl URL index and the Y Combinator company list. Boards we found only by guessing from a company name are kept only if that company's name appears in its own postings.
  2. PM roles only. Titles like Product Manager, Product Owner, Product Lead, Director/VP/Head of Product and CPO. Product marketing, design, engineering, analyst, program/project manager and intern roles are excluded.
  3. No middlemen. Job aggregators and staffing firms that post roles "on behalf of a client" are excluded, because their ads describe someone else's team.
  4. Duplicates removed. The same role posted for several locations, or the same description reused, counts once.
  5. One count per tool per posting. A posting that names Jira five times counts once for Jira.
  6. Careful matching. Tool names that are also ordinary words (Linear, Canny, Amplitude, Heap, Notion, Slack, Cursor, Claude, Lovable, Maze, Coda, Segment) are matched case-sensitively and only in tool-like contexts, e.g. "linear regression" and "lovable products" don't count.
  7. Not a stack signal. We skip mentions in customer, investor and partner lists ("customers such as Notion"), "now part of Salesforce", "integrates with", and a vendor's own job ads for its own product.
  8. Limits. Most PM postings name no tools at all, companies on Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby lean toward tech and venture-backed firms (not a random sample of all employers), the same role posted under one title for several teams counts once, and some mentions are systems a PM will build for rather than use. Treat small counts as directional.

Independence

Rankings come only from the data. Vendors can sponsor the newsletter or buy a clearly labelled featured slot, but they can't change a rank. Some outbound links may be affiliate links, and they're marked.
